The commissar fixates her emerald eyes on the small man to whose credit, doesn’t flinch a bit.
-As I said, this is First rank Commissar Katharine Bryce speaking under the authority of the Aurean subsector`s High Command!

-I spit on the High Command! I spit on that furth son of a thousand whores of Stulton! And you! -His glacial eyes piercing through Thanatos` very soul- You abandoned us, traitor!

The soldier averts his eyes in response.
-Yes, I did… but I`m not sorry. You should have come with us.-
-I had a duty! We both had a duty towards the 106th of Chagoth! You deserted! You left your brothers and sisters!
His voice trembles a little bit haunted by vivid memories as his eyes begin to wet.
-I saw all of them die one by one trapped and forgotten in this Emperor-forsaken caves! chewed and gnawed like cattle! And the screams… and cries…

The officer turns his head suddenly and looks at Commissar Bryce with steely determination.

-Still, we fought! The whole 106th of Chagoth! Hundreds of men and women, all good soldiers went down to the pits standing over the corpses of their brothers and sisters! Communications were impossible to set, but we kept going on and on. We fought for each corridor and junction. until we run out of supplies and then we kept going on!

The underground atmosphere is oppressive and cold, and far into the darkness, by the other side of the gates, some mutant screeching is clearly heard.

-But they kept coming, wave after wave… by thousands… millions! Their bones were stuck in the tracks tanks, their guts clogged our cannons!
the veteran soldier composes himself for a moment and exhales slowly
-We found a distress signal bouncing through the galleries and we followed it until we reached this place… only a handful of us, where we found some survivors from the previous wave of reinforcements. Trapped as we are now.- The gun drops down and is holstered with a sigh. -None of them are alive now.-

Thanatos looks at the lieutenant -What killed them?
-Time. Is the fog… Don`t you smell it? It carries some stuff that end up making you go nuts if breathed in constantly. Even with the masks on, the filters start to get leaks after some weeks…

Doctor Bast lifts a hand.
-Where does it come from?

A finger slowly points towards the inner bulding of the complex.
-From in there, there is a big vent terminal that spits that shit day and night. We also found a hidden door in an empty room, but it`s shielded and coded.. We sealed the vent, the room and the base the best we could, but it just keeps leaking.

Lieutenant Miles smirks. -We couldn’t get in and we couldn’t go out.. All left for us was dying.
